I woke up at 6:20 and it was 36 degrees with 97% humidity. I dressed and went up to the Crow's Nest for Coffee and pastries at 6:45. We were going through Neumayer Channel so I went outside at 7 and took pictures for about an hour before I had to go back inside for another cup of coffee to warm my hands. I went back out for another 20 minutes, but the wind came up and I went to breakfast at 8:30. There was so much to see and take in that you can't miss much. At 9, I went back to the cabin to download the pictures. I managed to get a picture of penguins swimming past the ship and seals on an iceberg. Not really great pictures, but they were a ways from the ship and the swimmers were fast. I took some pictures of the expedition provisions displayed in the Crow's Nest. At 11, we entered Paradise Bay and I went back outside. At 11:45, it started to snow a little and the temp seemed to be dropping so I went back to the cabin to warm up and download more photos. I went back out t 1 and saw a seal floating by on ice and a penguin colony. At 1:30, we exited Paradise Bay and were 2 hours from the next point of interest so I went back to the cabin to work on the blog and download more pictures. At 3:30 it started to rain and the narrator said that 6 humpback whales were spotted in front of the ship. I got re-dressed to go out and attempt to get some pictures. I finally came in at 5 to get ready for the evening. At 5:30, the Captain announced that due to the Corona virus, Palmer Station is closed for all ships, both cruise and expedition ships, for the season but there will be much more Antarctic cruising to come. I went to the Crow's Nest at 6:30 and sat in Don's chair since he did not show up tonight. I talked with the Captain's wife and her cousin Karen, Jim & Cathy, Sue, Leslie and others. After dinner, I went back to the cabin to update the blog and I went to bed at 9:30.
I got up at 5 and it was 34 degrees with 97% humidity. I got dressed for cold weather and went up to the Crow's Nest for coffee and sweet rolls at 6 to look out the windows. It was so foggy that you could see very far. I did see 1 bird fly by. I went back to the cabin to catch up on the blog after the outages we had last night. I went out on the bow and took a few pictures of King George Island and then to the walking deck to take some more. I went to breakfast at 7:30 and then went outside again at 8:30 and took more pictures. It is very beautiful and not extremely cold yet. I continued to go out for 10 to 15 minutes every hour to take more pictures as we progressed. At noon, we were between landfalls, so I stayed warm in the cabin until 4 when we reached Deception Island and I saw some penguins in the water but was unable to get a picture. The nesting grounds were too far away for a good shot. I got really cold and went back to the cabin at 4:30. We have been told to conserve water until we get to Ushuaia on February 4. Skip a shower occasionally and they are reducing laundry service and not washing the decks. I went to the Crow's Nest at 6:30 and talked with Don, Jim & Cathy, Sue and Rita. After dinner, I went back to the cabin as the narration of day 2 begins at 7. I went to bed at 9:30.
